Hi -

I have a 2006 HR with the Onan QD8000 generator, and it just quit (on a really hot texas-day, naturally). It started flashing the overheat codes, so I checked fluids etc, to no avail. It'll run for maybe a minute then shut-down again.

Upon opening the small door on the bottom, I found a few loose small pieces of what looks like might have been a belt of some kind - altho they was too few and too small to make a positive-identification. The big squirrel-cage blower fan does spin with the gen, but I am wondering if there's maybe a water-pump belt or similar that isn't part of the squirrel-cage portion.

Does anyone have any insight as to what's inside of these beasts? Does anyone have a service manual to look up the various parts?

If it's relatively-simple like a belt, then maybe I can get 'er going again, otherwise I'm probably looking at a healthy repair-bill.

Help? Anyone?

Thanks!
Ron

Ron, you do have a belt on the opposite end of the engine from the blower wheel. About the pieces you found; have you checked to be sure they are not magnet? This may or may not be in warranty so you might as first. To repair this the generator will have to be dropped or pulled out so at least the top can be removed. Good luck and keep us posted as to the outcome.

Hi Mike -

Once again, you've come to my rescue. Many many thanks!

Not sure what you mean by ".. they are not magnet...". The pieces kinda look to me like parts of a frayed belt of some sort, a piece of a fiber-core and a sort-of fabric layer or piece that could be from an outer-layer.
Thanks for the confirmation. The blower does spin, but the gen blinks 'overheat' within a minute of start-up, just as if there was no water in it (but I checked that), and as if maybe another belt ran a water-pump.

Yeah, I looked at it and it's gonna be a bear to gain access, sure hope it's a warranty-issue! My main concern about a phantom-belt is if there was something simple (yeah right, on the coaches these days who am I kidding???) I could replace.

I'll definitely keep y'all posted!
Ron

Ron,
This is exactly what was going on with bsavage when we met them at Donner Lake. Might want to post this in our Monaco forum also as I do not remember what the outcome on theirs was..

Ronboc...
I found the bsavage post from the July 13th weekend that talks about their problem. I have not read all theway through it...but Sacs seems to think they did redo belts (took 2 and switched it over to a single serpentine belt) Seems like there was a bulletin on it ...

WOW! Thanks y'all, for the reminder.

I'd jumped in on that thread back in the beginning, when no-one was thinking of the belts. And didn't realize it had any!

Just called Cummins and they confirmed the diagnosis, and the appointment is scheduled for tomorrow. Will let you know the solution.

Ron

A big thanks!
