Onan QG 5500 Quit Running

Hello, I have a 2009 Win. with a QG 5500 Onan that I had running in the driveway when all of a sudden it stopped. I figured it stopped because I was low on gas?? After hitting the gas station and filling her up, I tried starting the Onan again and it wouldn't start. I'd appreciate any help I can get. That thing probably has less than 10 hrs on it if that. Thanks

Gregg,

If you ran out of fuel, it would take a while before you will be able to get fuel from the tank to the generator. You may have to attempt to start it several times before it will start. I don't know your specific generator, but you may be able to get trouble codes from the LED display on the front of the generator. something to check into anyway.

Thanks jifbatonrg, If I can get the front panel off I will look for LED lights. I'm new to working on Onans. Do I just pull on the front panel? By the way I have the cummins QG 5500 (gas Powered). Thanks for your help!

Gregg,

I'm not sure how your generator is set up. There is usually a manual start/stop switch on the outside of the unit. In that switch there is often a small LED pad that lights up red when the generator is running. On our diesel units, you can press and hold the switch in the stop position for a few seconds and the generator will go into diagnostic mode. it will start flashing, then pause then flash a number of times pause and flash again a number of times. Those number of flashes are the error codes, ex: 3 flashes, pause, 3 flashes gives a code of 33. Hope this helps.

Another suggestion would be to go to the Onan site and and download a manual on your specific generator.

I agree wtih Jim and Lynda. If the genny stopped due to fuel starvation, you're going to need to get the fuel flowing again from the line at the gas tank to the genny's carb. This might take some extended priming (holding the switch in the off position) and several attempts at starting to get the gas sucked the distance. The distance of the genny from the gas tank can also play a role.

Have someone listen outside the genset while you hold the prime button. It may take a bit. You should be able to hear a change in the sound when the gas finally reaches the pump and pressurizes. You should then be able to start it.
You may be able to do this using the start button on the genset. Press and hold in the off position.

Thanks to those that replied with advice. I took my RV back to storage yesterday but will take a look at it in the coming days and let you know what I find out.

Went to storage today to crank over the Gen. to see what fault light I'd get. I ended up getting a 44. From what I read 44 isn't a fault code just an indicator that the unit didn't start in 30 seconds. I held the primer for quite awhile and still nothing. All I heard when I held the primer switch down was the sound of a solenoid clicking (one click). I was told I should hear the fuel pump clicking too??? I don't believe it was but then again I don't know where it is??? By the way my unit has a EFI not a carb. Thanks, Gregg

Dabrooks, I checked the oil yesterday. The oil was closer to the Add line than it was the Full line but I didn't think it needed any immediately. Since you brought up oil, what oil do you use? Can you use automotive oil? If so, what brand do you recommend. Thanks for your help

Since you are not sure what oil is in it you might want to change it and start from scratch. Mine came with 15w 40 but my book says I can use 10w30 or straight 30 depending on the temperature range it will be used in. If it is low on oil it will shut down. You might want to just try to top it off with some 10w 30 to see if it will start. If it does I won't run it very long before I changed the oil. I am no expert on Onans but I know they will shut down for low oil. If you don't have a book for yours you maybe able to download one and that will tell you more about the recommended oil.

Did some work on the Onan today and it still isn't starting. Found that the Fuel Pump was bad and changed it out. I really hoped that would do it but it didn't fix the problem. It fixed "A" problem but not "THE" problem. After installing the new pump I checked to make sure it was pumping gas and found that there was no gas in the line for it to pump!!! The pump was definitely bad and there is no gas in the line. Does the pump draw the gas out of the tank or does gravity feed it to the pump. I looked at the fuel level and it is registering a 1/2 tank on the gauge. I've always heard a 1/4 tank and it shuts down, could it be a 1/2 on my rig. Thanks for all the help!

Get your lawnmower gas can and a few feet of fuel line, connect it to the fuel pump, see if it will run on an external fuel source.

Second what mgscott said. If it runs and the fuel pump pulls it up out of the can. Then you may have a clogged or pinched line. It could be kinked about anywhere it has to make a tight turn.
