I'm having some trouble with the genny. It seems that the frequency is varying from 60 Hz (normal) and spiking up to 120 Hz at times. When it spikes, it seems that the genny revs like there is a load on it. I know there is nothing on in the MH. Any one else have such a problem? Any idea what it might be? Could it be a fuel problem or a controller issue with the generator?

I've had my RV service place look at it, but they are more a TT place that is not really into generators. They're the ones who diagnosed the spike in Hz.

I believe your QD is variable speed with an inverter.

I suggest that a visit to an Onan shop is in order.

Don't forget that you have the inverter/charger that could be drawing power to recharge the house battery bank. This could and should cause the generator to increase in rpm's but the frequency should remain at 60 Hz. I would question the 120 Hz reading with Cummins/Onan authorized service center as Dirk has mentioned.

IF this is an inverter generator then there are only two possible answers.

1: Bad frequency meter]
2: Bad inverter

If it is a traditional generator the frequency can not spike.. SURGE yes, spike no.

What's the difference?

This is a spike __________|__________

This is a surge ____----______

Thank you all for the feedback. I have an appointment at a Cummins/Onan service center a week from Monday. I just want to be able to understand what they're telling me about my generator. Problem is, I can't drive the MH very long without the genny running - TOO HOT in South GA this week!! Have to put her in dry dock for a few days.
