Can someone please explain to me in simple layman terms (because I'm a simple layman) the difference between the red, yellow and blue tops, and what the typical application(s) for each are?

Also what does the "group" number mean?

Thanks

From one Gary to another, hi.

Go here for the web site explaination. The bottom line is:
Yellow is deep cycle on steriods.
Red is for lots of cranking power for the engine.
Blue is deep cycle.

Thanks Gary. So for a new chassis battery, would I choose a red top for the cranking power, or (because it sometimes sits for a month and loses charge) go with a deep cycle?

Or am I just not getting it? (getting old sucks!)

Group number refers to the physical size/dimensions of the battery.

Usually, the larger the battery is, the more power it is able to store.

You want the Red Top, as it is designed for starting. It is designed to deliver high amps for a short period of time.

We are all getting older. My wife tells me I'm included.

You may be making this more complicated than it needs to be. If it was me, I'd buy the red top to start the engine and the blue top for the coach.

I do not buy Optima batteries. For the coach I purchase Discover AGM batteries. Newmar is now putting these in coaches as standard equipment. To start the engine I buy the highest brand name cranking batteries (I need 2) I can find.

Your coach may have the solar (5 watt) charger that trickle charges the engine battery.
