Hello--just installed a PI EMS with remote to FRED chassis Winnebago Adventurer. 2 issues: run the Onan generator and 'open ground' comes up, but it seems to work okay.

and technician did not know how to install remote readout except run telephone cord under the coach and bring in on other side. Thought there must be someone out there with a better solution?!

Appreciate any help! Thanks, sylrob

Hello sylrob and . We are glad to have you join us here and we look forward to reading of your adventures and experiences. I am sure you will enjoy the website and forums. Good luck, stay safe and keep us posted.
Can you provide us with some more information. What generator and remote models do you have? Is this a new install and the first time it has been tested? Where are you seeing the no ground fault? Have you tried adding a ground from the generator to the coach frame? Did a data or phone cable come with the remote? Was it ran in a wire loom?

I was able to fish the telephone wire through some compartments and up through a plumbing hole.

Some folks plug it into the phone jack in the electrical bay and put the remote near an internal phone jack.

It sounds like you have installed the PI EMS after your Transfer Switch versus before the TS. I installed my PI EMS HDW50C Remote before the TS as Onan claims that their generators have clean power.

I would contact Onan or a Cummins/Onan service center to see what they have to say regarding the "open ground" issue. Or is it possible that the PI EMS has a problem with it sensing an open ground when there really isn't one? Call PI as their customer service is the greatest.

Regarding the data cable that goes to the remote, each application is different so you will need to hear from another owner of the same coach that has installed a remote PI EMS unit to see how they ran the data cable. Remember that these cables are NOT telephone cables, they are wired differently than telephone cables.

I can tell you how I ran my data cable and installed the remote display, but that info would be useless to you as mine is in the rear of the coach and the cable runs through the closet.

Even though PI includes instructions for installing their EMS after the transfer switch, they do not recommend this as they feel the generator rarely causes problems and protecting the transfer switch is more important.
