I have an atwood furnace. The furnace works fine except that after a couple of minutes I get a high pitched whine that keeps building until the units shuts. It will then come on again and run fine and then the whine starts again. My wife says it sounds like a tea kettle.

The only moving part in the system is the blower motor and its associated fans. The most likely cause of the whine is the motor bearings lacking lubrication. Second most likely cause one of the two fans contacting surronding metal.

I have two Atwood 8525s and the front one had the same type of noise that you describe. I took it apart enough to pour oil in the blower motore bearing (which turns out is really a bushing) and the noise stopped - for a while.

I just put in the replacement motor and it is back to being quiet again. Putting in the motor isn't a terrible job and I was able to buy the motor locally for $39. If you aren't comfortable working around propane (you have to take the gas valve out to replace the motor), I suggest taking it to a professional.
