Progressive Industries Electrical Protection

I was told the best buy for a surge protector would be Progressive Industries. They have a number of different units I am not sure which one to buy. I have a Newmar Dutch Star. I do need a 50 amp(I think). Can anyone tell me which one to order? I do want the one which would give me the most protection.

Welcome to iRV2.

My 99 Dutch Star is 50 amp ( 4 prongs on the power cord)
I'll check the Progressive web site to check out their models.
Do you have a shop you trust to install a hardwired ( non plug in surge protector) or would you prefer an external to the coach plug in unit?
Does your coach have a cord reel to wind up the cord?

You didn't mention the model year of your Dutch Star. Unless it's 20 years old I would be very surprised if it isn't wired for 50amp service.

Also, do you want to hard wire it or use one that mounts at the pedestal?

I have a Progressive Industries EMS - PT50C which is a portable (mount at the pedestal) 50 amp surge protector and electrical management system. It not only protects against power surges, it monitors voltage, polarity and ground circuit. If voltage is too low or too high, it'll cut the circuit to prevent damaging any electrical appliances or motors.

For some reason I can't edit my first post .

If you have 50 amp and I'm sure you do. Then you can eliminate 1/2 the products.
JMHO: I prefer the hardwired EMS-HW50C advantage over the EMS-PT50C portable , the HW unit is out of sight in a locked compartment, very hard to steal. Disadvantage, hard to take with you if you trade RV's.
Note: any of the protectors are better than doing without. You're the one paying the bill, and your RV deserves protection.

Skip - the EMS - PT50C comes with a metal collar on the plug cable to use as an attachment point for a lock. I always lock mine with a Kryptonite cable to the pedestal. I'm sure a determined thief could cut through the cable, but he would be exposing himself while doing so.

I spliced my cord and added male and female plugs and kept the portable one in the basement.

You want the EMS-PT50C (Portable Unit with ALL the protection/surge features)

OR the EMS-HW50C with remote display (Hardwired Unit with ALL the protection/surge features)

I like the pedestal mounted model. If it is going to take a hit, I rather not have it happen in my electrical compartment. Get the more expensive model that offers more protection. In a year ours has shut us down maybe 12 - 20 times.

I am surprised your Newmar didn't come with one hardwired in already. It should be a black box (~10"sq) in your shore power compartment with your shore power into the box, output cord and 2 or 3 smaller wires leading out.
What year is your DS?

Progressive Industries is definitely the way to go, but I am not familiar with their latest models.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

That's surprising! My 2000 Winnebago came with one, standard equipment. I'd never be without one now.

50A surge suppressor

I installed the EMS-HW50C in my 2005 Tuscany shortly after I bought it last year. A couple of months later when I hooked up at an RV park in Reno it detected a low voltage problem on the parks L2 circuit and prevented a real problem for me. You can buy an extra display with a switch so you can monitor it from the electrical compartment or inside the coach. I highly recommend it.

We also have one , it has saved us more than once from damage possibly being done. I recommend them to anyone I talk to , but it is amazing how many people won't spend the extra $$$ , instead they buy the cheapies, i'm sure they work fine but once they die for whatever reason your stuck buying a new one, at least with the Progressive if it die they will send you a replacement...moral of the story, pay a little extra now and support an american company
