I finally decided to install the Progressive Industries HW-50C Electrical Management System. Hated to spend that money, but kept reading where somebody else had burned up all their equipment because of electrical problems.

I chose the hardwired model with the remote display because I was concerned about somebody stealing the portable model. About halfway through the installation, struggling with the #6 AWG wires, I wished I had gone with the portable! Man, those wires are STIFF ! Anyway, that's one more worry off my shoulders, and my sore hands will eventually get back to normal!

I feel your pain. I went thru the same thing on my camper. Afterward, I ordered some SO cord so that if I ever had to go back into it, I coult do it differently. Also bought some splices just in case I ever had to bypass if it failed and the built in bypass didn't work while we were on the road somewhere.

Love ours. I wired it in using 50 plugs and receptacles so I can remove it from the circuit if I wanted to, or if I wanted to add a auto-former.

Probably one of the best installations I have seen is this one. It allows for BOTH hard wired OR portable use by simply wiring in outlets inside the RV so that you can either plug a (portable or built-in) protector INSIDE the RV (use it in the built-in mode) or remove the protector and use it at the pedestal like a portable protector.

Still doesn't make messing with AWG#6 any easier though....

Surge Protector - Portable or inline?

That is exactly what I did.

I thought about doing that, but decided it would make it too easy for someone to steal!

Is that inside the living area, or in a storage compartment?

I went with the portable last winter and it hasn't grown legs yet. Thanks for the reminder, good quality chain is on my shopping list for Lowes tomorrow.

I don't think you can use the hard wired one outside in the elements.

Excellent point, so buy the portable protector and wire the shore power bay with plugs and use the portable in either position (bay or pedestal).
