Propane Gas Level Indicator Problem

Ok so we are going through our new to us trailer. One issue we have is the left propane tank leaks. Using the handy dandy soapy water test I found the problem lies in the gas level indicator is leaking. The black plastic fitting that connects to the tank it self appears to have backed out partially from the metal fitting. Its a Flame King bran indicator.

Is it possible or even recommended to screw the connector back in to the metal housing or just toss it and buy a new one?

I was able to get a needle nose pliers around the fitting without damaging it and backed it out. I sealed it with gas dope and reattached it. No more leaks.
