Propane weighs about 4.25 lbs per gallon.

You need to know if your 38 gallon tank is the water capacity, which is how ASME tanks are measured, as propane can only be filled to the 80% level or 30.4 gallons.

Dirk is corret as usual. As I've filled 1,000s of tanks over the past 4.5 years of my campground ownership, I can quote you the 20lb and 30lb gallons involuntarily.

A 20lb tank will hold 4.7 gallons which is 80% capacity. A 30lb tank holds 7.2 gallons at 80%.

BTW, I've developed the talent of guessing w/in 10% of how full a tank is by lifting it. It is nothing of use but, a nice diversion.

Thanks guys....I believe my tank is water measurement so 30 gallons of propane full..or .I have not refilled it since purchase 2 yrs ago when the gauge showed full and I still have about 1/2 tank running almost exclusively the fridge...used the cooktop x 3. I will be hooking up my Weber Q to that tank....equals about 127 of those 1 pound throwaways, buying the propane at about $3.40 per gallon vs $10.60 per gallon in the throw aways..It looks like 2/3rds of the throwaway price is in the part you throw away!!
