We're getting ready for an extended trip, going to RV parks we've not been to before, and I've noticed that many recommend checking the power supply at RV sites before connecting. We have a surge protector but in addition, I bought a 3-wire receptacle tester at WalMart which indicates open ground, open neutral, open hot, hot/grd reverse and correct. Is there an adapter in which I would plug the receptacle tester into and then plug the adapter/receptacle tester into the 50 amp outlet?

On page 57 of the May 2011 issue of Motorhome magazine, there is a photo of a circuit tester and an adapter which the author suggests using before connecting the motorhome power cord to an external 120-volt AC power source. Would this only work for 30 amps and if so and it tested OK would that then mean that the 50 amp connector was OK?

Thanks,
Robert

There are adapters for pretty much anything you can think of and some you can't to anything else, or do what I do and make my own.

Here is a link to a page that tells you how to use your three wire tester on a 50 AMP service. Near the bottom of the page is a link to the 50 AMP tester.

RV Electric Click on the outlet testing button in the left frame.

You can use your tester for 50 AMP but since 50 AMP is actually two 120VAC circuits you need a way to test both legs and this gismo does that.

Here is another choice! You can check the pedistal and get surge protection all in one. This also works with a 30 AMP service by using the same adapter you probably already have. It costs about $100 but in the long run it's probably worth it given the trip you are planning.
