I just replace a very hard to open black tank valve. It took 3 tries to get it in without pinching the seal. Later, I was wondering if I should have lubricated the new valve in any way befor putting it in to keep it operating better longer?

You can add a valve lubricant that contains a coconut oil after cleaning the tanks. I think Camco is one brand of lube that I have use. Also good for toilet valve seal too.

I've seen some dump valves with a zerk fitting. I'm not sure if this was normal or if people have added them. I don't think you'd use normal grease, but I've seen stranger things.

Personally, we use the tank chemical with the lube built in.

Our valve pulls were getting really hard to use, so a couple of weeks ago I began using Thetford Valve Lubricant. For the initial application I added the lubricant and then filled the tanks partially. Then emptied a small amount at a time so I had to keep opening and closing the valves. I could tell the difference immediately.

I'm adding it every other time I dump the black tank. Except for the grey, which I leave open most of the time and then fill and clean a couple of times a week.

I have heard of two other methods to lubricate the valves.

1. Drill a small hole above the pull rod and spray in silicone lubricant, plug the hole with a small sheet metal screw. (Seems like this would work but after repeatedly removing and reinstalling the screw the hole might enlarge)

2. Pour a cup of vegetable oil in the head before and after dumping. Work the valve to spread the oil.

Haven't tried either method, just thought I'd share them.
