Replaced the run/start capacitor it was in fact dead. All fans running but the compressor will not start is it just dead or if I tap on it might that coerce it to start.

If tapping on it makes it run, are you then going to cut a hole in the roof so you can reach out and hit the compressor with a hammer everytime you want it to run? An A/C tech could examine the electrical system, control board, and measure the amp draw when it tries to run. That will give an accurate assessment to the health of the unit.

Your run/ start capacitor is two separate items. The run capacitor normally is a dual capacitor. One terminal for the compressor and the other is for the fan motor. This usually has a metal case. The compressor start is normally a plastic case unit with two terminals. If you were trying to start the compressor with a bad run capacitor the compressor motor will heat up an a internal overload will open the circuit to motor. This normally take about 4 hours to cool down a reset. If the compressor was hot to touch this could of been you problem at that time. If this is not your problem you can use a larger size start capacitor ONE time only to try to break the motor free THEN PUT THE RIGHT ONE BACK ON
