Rotten meat smell in freezer/how I removed it.

When I bought a TT last April, the freezer was running and I noticed a faint rotten meat smell in the freezer, but the coffee grounds that were in the freezer when I bought it covered most of the smell.

I quickly discovered that whenever I used the freezer, shut it off and left the doors open to air out, that the entire trailer smelled like rotten meat.

I tried all of the suggested methods for removing rotten meat smell only to discover that the smell came back with a vengeance whenever it went through a cycle of use and then shut down.

I stumbled upon an article about hydrogen peroxide and how well it works to sanitize countertops and anything else in the kitchen and bathroom. I had nothing to lose so I tried it.

Now, my Norcold has a panel with an exposed edge that sits on the floor of the freezer then goes up the back wall and onto the ceiling of the freezer. Other freezers may not be the same.

What I did:

I poured a pool of hydrogen peroxide onto the floor of the freezer that went a little over the edge of the panel. I then took a cloth and scrubbed the interior of the freezer with the hydrogen peroxide, paying particular attention to the edges of the panel. I then topped off the level of hydrogen peroxide and let it set for 2 days.

After 2 days there were some patches of brown floating on top of the hydrogen peroxide so I sopped up all the liquid and repeated the process of cleaning with hydrogen peroxide and leaving a pool in the bottom of the freezer.

A couple days later there was nothing floating on the hydrogen peroxide so I sopped up all the liquid and the smell was gone.

I have since run the freezer through multiple freeze and thaw cycles and the smell is gone.

What a relief, I was starting to consider replacement of the refrigerator/freezer. The 97 cent bottle saved me a lot of work and over $1,000 dollars.

No problem, just hoping it will be able to save someone a lot of time and trouble and possibly the expense of buying and installing a new refrigerator/freezer.

Take care
Ken

I had a Norcold 1200 which had the same problem. Previous owner was short and couldn't feel the package of meat behind that lip. I used peroxide a couple of times. It surely helped but never completely cured the problem. A leak in the coils cured it though as it went to the dump!

Glad it worked for you, it's the best cure I know of.
