RV Air Conditioner

I have 2 A/C units in this RV. I went camping not to long after it was purchased.
The campground had a power surge of some kind and all the power was lost.
The A/C was not on because it was in late winter.
This RV was not protected with a surge protector because of no knowledge of needing one.
Now that I find myself having to live in the RV for a few months in the summer...l need A/C.
The main A/C Fan blows but the compressor doesn't come on. I did some research and even talked to an A/C guy who suggested it may be the capacitor so I changed the capacitor and no luck. I guess the next step is to ohm out the compressor?
My second A/C in the toy hauler works but sometimes when it cycles off I guess the compressor cuts off but the motor hums for 5 to 10 seconds and then the compressor comes back on. It does that process 3 or four times and then finally
Cycles off like normal. Any ideas on either a/c would be appreciated.

Thanks for joining us! Please tell us what age / model of A/Cs you have - helps to narrow down some recommendations. Take a look also at the back side of your thermostat - is everything tight and clean? And the same on the roof units with the shrouds removed. You should also reset the A/C breakers - even if they don't look like they're tripped turn them off and back on.

Once in awhile a reset of the 12-volt system helps - basically shut down the entire coach including the battery switches, wait 10 - 15 minutes and then bring things back on-line (thermostat last). It can also be somewhat diagnostic to see if the A/Cs behave the same way running off the generator. And given that you have 2 A/Cs if you don't have 50amp power service you may be experiencing an inadequate power situation. And please do amend your signature with the type of RV you have - that helps greatly.

Let us know what results - we all learn ... thanks

I have a 50 amp Heartland Torque 2015. I have had the A/C breakers off for an hour while I replaced the Capacitor on the main unit. The main A/C is 15,000 BTU.
About the generator...it's a 5500 Onin, It sat for a few months and now it won't start. My brother and I drained the old gas put in new gas and cleaned the carburetor and still didn't start. Anyway just working on the A/C for now. Can't take it to the shop when you live in it. Codensor coils, Evaporator coils and filters are clean. I will check behind the thermostats. Thanks

Glad to have you here in the forum with us.

Being you can't take it to the repair shop, try to find a mobile mechanic that can come out to you.

Happy Trails!!!
