Is anyone out there using a satellite internet set up on their Rv? If so, what are you using, and how is it doing? I would like to be able to stay in touch with my office system while away, and am also working on setting up an online business that I would want to access while out and about.

Steve,
I have the direcway system at home and while it works very well, it is not suitable for use with an RV. Too large and bulky plus it takes much more precision to set up than a normal TV satellite and therefore requires a technician to set it up.

Steve, check out the section above this as you will find a lot of info on this subject there. If you have about $5k to invest in equipment and want or neeed to pay $90/mo for programming then there are systems that can and do a nice job of internet access in an rv.

I've seen a few Direcways systems set up on tripods in RV parks, a search on the word Direcway in our New Technology, Inventions and Creative Solutions forums produced 25 hits. You might try a search or use the one I did by clicking here.

Have you consider Verison wireless. They offer 150K almost everywhere and they are implementing broadband in mnany cities, but you probably won't get broadband in remote CG's. $80 / month for unlimited service.

Ken Lenger is right on with Verizon (or Cingular or both). Verizon is better MO.

We have a Direcway at home, works ok. We'll switch to Verizon Broadband when it opens in MPLS.MN.

Verizon is the way to go especially if you are RVing in the western states.

I use my computer with Verizon Mobile Office software all day for $80.00/month, and it does not matter where I am there are no roaming charges on 'data links'.

Additionally with a 'homebrew' Yagi beam cellular antenna I would be willing to bet there is no where in the southwestern states where you cannot hit a Verison cellular tower.

I built mine for under $10.00. The plans are on the FREEROADER.com site. A piece of coax, PVC pipe and Radio Shack aluminium 8 gauge ground wire is all it takes.

We have been using Verizon Wireless for Internet access for most of the 2+ years we have been on the road. I would say that "150K almost everywhere" is a bit of an exageration, but we have been able to connect to their "high speed" (144 kbps max) network 90% of the time. I would caution you to look at the "NationalAccess" coverage map on the Verizon web site before committing to a contract, though. There are large parts of the country that are not covered by the NationalAccess network, and that's the ONLY network we get for our $80/month. The $80 plan does not include access to the more widely available "Quick2Net" (14.4 kbps) network.
