Sealand Toilet Leak

Hi, I have a different toilet leak than what I've seen most people report. I have a Sealand Traveler toilet and I find water on the floor only after leaning to one side while sitting on the toilet. Does this sound like the band clamp is loose or do I need to replace the flange seal where the toilet mounts to the "floor/base"? It only occurs when my 250 pound body weight is on the seat and I've leaned to one side (I think you can guess why I'm leaning to one side ). It won't do it if my wife who weighs half what I do is sitting on the toilet. I also haven't asked a second person to inspect for where the leak is coming from......but I'll do that next. Any suggestions on where the leak might be coming from? Thanks for your help!

My Traveler Lite leaked, but it was fresh water. The valve under the round cover for the foot flush was leaking. Leaning could just be stressing the water line enough to cause a leak. The valves are a known problem. About $30 when I did it and 5 minutes work.

bbdmac welcome to irv2.
If its a ceramic base your have a steel band around toilet bowl and base its attached to.
Tighten the band and it should take care of your problem.
My two toilets when new had same problem when my wife used them.

I replaced both gaskets and the ball on ours. Not a bad job. Much nicer if you can empty, rinse, add soap and rinse again first.

If it is just the band clamp you have a really easy job. Loosen one screw to remove the cover then there is a worm gear (radiator) clamp with the gear to tighten in the back facing right as you look at it on ours. You will know if it is loose but don't crank on it too hard.

BTW every time I hear band clamp I thing of the movie American Pie

Video has mild adult language. View at own risk.

HD4Mark,

There are primarily 4 types of water leaks with a SeaLand toilet.

1. Worn water valve. Normally shows up on the left side of the toilet where the foot lever connects. Replace the water valve.

2. Ruptured vacuum breaker. Normally shows up as a fan shaped spray of water on the wall behind the toilet when flushing. Replace the vacuum breaker. (there are two types - with and without hand flush)

3. Bowl will not hold water. Normally the result of a worn set of seals around the flushing ball. Replace seals.

4. Seaping out on the floor somehwere from the bottom of the toilet. Normally from a loose mount and/or from a worn out flange seal (the result of a loose mount).

Best way to determine if the mount is loose -- Can you wobble your toilet from side to side with your hands? If it is loose, I recommend dismounting the toilet and replacing the flange seal, then remounting and tightening the connection bolts. Do the job right, not twice!

Hope this helps.

There's a fifth possibility that has been discussed on this forum. Toilets in full-timer rigs tend to be prone to this problem due to the extensive use they get. In short, the shaft that goes from the flush pedal to the flushing ball eventually produces an oval-shaped hole (from friction) which in turn leaks water from the bowl onto the floor (normally on the side with the pedal). I've used silicone to stop the leak but it only works for a little while. Best solution, new toilet since it isn't cost effective to replace the base. If we can dig up five more possibilities, I'll be able to publish an article titled "Ten Possible Sources for a Leaking Toilet".

Thanks for all of the replies. I finally made it back up to my Fifth Wheel and I brought deep sockets so I could tighten up the bolts that hold the toilet down to the floor. While I was doing this I also tightened up the clamp that goes around the bottom of the bowl itself. I'm not sure which of these corrected the problem but the leak has been fixed. Thanks for all of the quick feedback!

I my memory serves me there is a single Phillips head screw that holds the cover around the base toward the top of it and two more in the flush pedal cover you will see after getting that off. The cover on the base just hinges off after the one screw is loose.

srzak,

The 12 volt water pump is rated in terms of gallons per minute (GPM) rather than pounds per square inch (PSI). The actual output is around 45 - 55 PSI, depending on the pump manufacturer.

The recommended maximum city water pressure for most RVs is 60 PSI. That's why the regulators with fixed pressure settings provide 40 to 55 PSI. This is a safety precaution because some city water pressures can be as high as 120 PSI. [The recommended 60 PSI max has to do with the fragility of the connection pieces rather than the actual tubing (piping).]

While some RVers use adjustable pressure regulators, I am not a fan of them. I repair as many water leaks in RVs with such a regulator as I do in RVs with no regulator. The supposition seems to be that a higher water pressure will give you a "better" shower. A better shower head will actually do more for you.

Please remember, we're talking about a recreational vehicle with limitations, not a house. Trying to make an RV function just like a house can actually cause more problems than anyone actually needs. (Although, I do make a good living from fixing the problems!)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I wanted one to turn down the pressure. Seems it does not leak with pump.can a factory regulator go bad.
