My Sharp R-1874 microwave/convection has died. I need to replace it but the local repair shop say they do not work on microwaves. And they think that Sharp microwaves are no longer put in RV's due to "fire problems".

Has anyone replaced their Sharp microwave or heard any stories about the safety of Sharp microwaves in RV's?

Thanks,
Luke

Mine quit and i replaced it with another sharp,an exact replacement other than better key pad. Sharp is still big in the rv ind. If you look around at other coaches. I went and looked at the place i found the best deal and the don't offer the sharp no more on their web site. They are all standard size of 30" so most any over the counter unit will fit in the space i believe. Good luck.

The microwaves in RV are the same as used in stick houses; no differences. I suggest you find a repair center. You could even find a Sharp authorized dealer by doing a Google search. Our 12 year old Sharp is still going but has been repaired a few times along the way. I got used everyday for 7.5 years when we were full timing. I still think Sharp makes good equipment.

Microwaves are not that expensive - I would never consider having an old microwave repaired - life's too short. Buy a new microwave - doesn't have to be Sharp.

Never heard of any fires caused by them.
Mine had a problem...would run 59 seconds and stop. That is a very common problem and can be repaired for about $130.
What is wrong with yours?

I just replaced my 7 year old Sharp R820 bk convection microwave. I ordered it from Amazon (free shipping) Monday a week ago. They shipped it the same day and we received it here in the AZ hinterland on Friday.

Note that you may have the available build in kit installed which brings air in from the front and blows it back out the front. If so you will probably want to replace your unit with the same model since the kits are designed for specific models.

If you have the kit installed you will need to remove it from the old microwave (some sheet metal ducting held on with a few screws) and install it on the new unit.

Luke,
Give us more info for diagnosis; unless you just "want" another MW unit...

Describe the symptoms & what lights up or not. Yours is an '07...should still have some life left in her.
Several safety interconnects are in play on these units; are most likely than not, the cause of shutdown. An appliance mechanic could trouble shoot, you could go thru the manual checklist or, throw us some more specific information on what's happening.

For example:
A soiled door latch will trigger a safety relay. A slammed door could affect the door position sensor. A bad turntable motor [$20] will void the entire microwave operation. Any of these are easy, economical fixes.

We are currently camping in Blythe, CA, outside Quartzsite. There is no one in 100 miles that repairs microwaves, so I ordered an exact replacement that arrived yesterday. Great price and service from this company and no sales tax.

1.1 cu. ft. Convection Over-the-Range Microwave in Stainless Steel R1874 by Sharp

I will take the old one home to San Jose and have it repaired and it will replace the current older microwave I have in the kitchen.
