As I start to equip the new Journey, which would be better to install; a 50 amp Surge Guard or a 50 Amp Autoformer? Also, which brands are the best?

Niether one- you should get the Progressive unit, it's much better all the way around and the customer support is stellar. You shouldn't need the Autoformer at all unless you stay in places where the power rises and falls alot.

Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C is the best, far superior to Surge Guard by TRC.C

x2. I just got mine installed and the peace-of-mind in knowing I'm fully protected is well worth the money!

The preferred is the Progressive Industries 50 amp hardwired unit. They are well worth the extra expense.

The Surge Guards, of which the Progressive Dynamics product mentioned is one of the best.. Protects against many things.. Over/Under voltage, and frequency, improperly wired pedistals (more common than you think) and more.. It also protects against spikes and surges (The smaller multi-outlet "surge guards" will not protect against surges... I know.. Detroit Edison proved it to me.. The expensive way)

An autoformer usually contains SPIKE supression, however like the low cost "Strips" used in houses and to protect computers will do nothing for a surge save sound like a firecracker going off.

However it may, and I stress MAY, correct a low voltage condition.

My choice.. If I could get a Power Guard (Surge guard) that could be programmed to trip off at a much lower voltage than the factory setting I'd use both

Pedestal====Surge guard====Autoformer===Rig

Alternative

Pedestal====Autoformer====Surge Guard====Rig Should work.

But I'd rather do it the first way Save I've not found one that works that way.
