I have an issue with a horizontal shower/tub mixer (hot and cold valves, diverter and shower hose outlet in the back). Is it standard to use plumbers putty on the mixer base and around the two large threaded inlets that go through the shower/tub? (these are the two parts that get the large nuts that secure the fixture in place from underneath).
I have had trouble with water getting into the mixer housing due to gap in diverter shaft and mixer housing. The water then migrates via gravity down either the hot or cold inlets forming a nice lake in my basement.
The OEM mixer did not have plumbers putty under the base, nor any silicone around the outside perimeter of the mixer base.
Thanks, Keith
