Sideways Water Softener?

I need one, but I don't have room to stand it up vertically 22". I think I can make it work by laying it down. I am looking at an On the Go Double Standard which is 9.75" diam. Does anyone know if you can install an On the Go horizontally; or, failing that, is there a company that makes a compact softener that does go horizontally?

I don't think you can operate any of the softeners on their side. The ion exchange resin inside is loose (it looks like fine sand) and it falls to the bottom of the tank. Water enters the top and flows down through the resin bed then up through a tube and out to the RV. Placing the tank on its side would allow all the resin to be on one side, and the incoming water would bypass it.

I think you can store the tank on its side when you're traveling down the road. You could then sit it outside when you stop. Most people operate their water softener sitting on the ground outside the RV.

I called them and asked this question. The answer was to not use it on its side.

Like Jeffery I called the manufacturer of mine (FloPur) and he said the same.

I ended up using a couple of short hoses with quick disconnects and set the softener upright under the edge of the motor home when parked for a while.

Two hoses because I have a whole house filter that stays connected in the service bay. The filter is connected before the softener to keep any sediment for coating the resin in the softener. While on the road one hose connects the water softener input to the output and goes in the trunk of the toad, and the other in another bay.

my rv softener is very clear...no horizontal installation, so i made room for it in the basement and ran water lines over to the wet bay and water line connections
