My furnance smells!... The furance works great, burns clean, cycles on and off fine, good heat.

The problem. when first turned on for the day it has a strong musty smell, strong enough to make your eyes water. After 15-20 minutes the smell is gone. The furnace will work fine the rest of the day with no smell. The next day same thing again.

I have cleaned the furnace and the duct work. If I run the furnace fan alone there is no smell but the first time I fire it up the smell is there.

Crack in the firebox? If so how can I confirm?

Thanks in advance
Rob

Furance has to be removed from RV for inspection

A Carbon Monoxide detector or better yet a tester can determine if the heat exchanger is cracked or in anyway allowing CO into the coach. I It appears as though some pest has gotten into the furnace and left their mark so to speak. The heat is reacting with this and causing the odor. Removal and thorough cleaning with proper cleaners for this problem is needed.

CO is odorless. Have you looked for critters (dead) in the ducting?

I know CO is odorless and further in my reply, I mention the fact that a pest had probably gotten into the furnace. I was answering his question as to how to check to see if there was a crack in "the fire box" (his words).

Mice do occupy some motor homes and they do smell especially when fried across furnace burner tubes.

I took the furance out and gave it a good look see. No cracks, No burn marks, no soot, no critters.

I ran a wet rag back and forth in the all the duct work, came out clean.
Cleaned the furnance inside and out then reinstalled. Fired up, no smell

I guess I'll wait a day or two and fire it up again and see what happens.
