Suburban Water Heater - Rewiring the AC
I have been having intermittent problems with my SW10DE that I addressed in a different thread. I had a bad thermostat / limit switch, then other failures that have cleared while I was testing. I now have a solid fault. I do not have AC at the switch on the water heater frame, so my next step is to remove a trim panel in the basement to gain access to the AC junction box on the forward side of the heater assembly.
I am considering doing a wiring modification if I find out that there is no AC at the junction box. My idea is to disconnect the original wiring to the coach's AC system, and install a separate cord that would plug in to the 20 amp service at a campsite pedestal. This would reduce the overall draw of the rest of the house, and would facilitate the use of sites that have only 30 and 20 amp service. One down side is that I wouldn't be able to use the water heater to load up the generator while cleaning the spark arrestor debris from the muffler. Another concern is that I would be relying on the pedestal circuit breaker instead of any protection in the house, but with the water heater drawing about 12 - 13 amps it seems to be about the right size.
Are there any other reasons that this would be a bone-headed thing to do?
