Let me start by saying that all I know about HVAC is that A/C's make rooms cold and furnaces make rooms hot, so please be gentle.

I have read some about hard start capacitor kits for A/C units, these gizmos like the Supco SPP6 Super boost seen here,

http://www.azpartsmaster.com/Product...Kit__SPP6.aspx

appear to be for A/C's that are struggling to start, I guess due to age, wear etc.

My question is if I put one on my 13.5BTU A/C that works just fine would it damage it in any way due to the increase in torque on compressor start up?

My reason for installing one is that I'll be dry camping in the desert for some time and run the A/C from a EU3000Is generator, and my thinking is the SPP6 would present less of a drag on the generator. Does this make sense or should I save my $12.00.

Thanks for your time.

Paul, your unit pretty much has the same components already on it. Adding one will not hurt it but I don't think you will get much help either. You might want to inspect and check out the ones (two components) on the unit. If the capacitor is out of specs the certainly you can use the Suppco SPP6; I have in the past in repairing units. Good luck and keep us posted.

Paul,

If it is not having a problem then there is no real need. However if your unit is getting a few years on it and your existing start capacitors are questionable you may want to play it safe and replace them anyway. How much will it cost you if one of your existing starters fails you while dry camping out in the desert? Will it result in a ruined trip or other losses?

Neil,

Thanks for your reply. Well here's the deal, I'm looking at these as an improvement on the efficiency of the A/C as well as the generator. Currently, I have no problems running both of the 13.4K BTU A/C at the same time, from my Onan 5.5Kw generator. And, I can run one at a time with the EU3000Is. For the past couple of weeks the daytime temps ran between 115-119F, we run both A/C units during the day off the Onan and only the bedroom unit at night off the EU3000Is. I would like to run only the EU3000Is and both A/Cs during the day, my thinking is that by adding the SPP6 I might be able to accomplish that.

If one of them failed the only loss would be comfort:-)!

Again, I'm looking at this only from an improvement in efficiency standpoint. It might allow both gennys to run more efficiently.

Paul,

It won't improve the overall effeciency of the AC while running only provide a bigger boost to kick over a hard starting compressor to get it going however once running the SPP6 no longer has any effect on the AC unit.
