This weekend while n a park we noticed small fluctuations in the power. What surge protector are you using and why?

We have been using the TRC Surge Guard for over 5 years. Not only does it provide for protection against surges and voltage spikes but also checks the wiring of the power source to be sure it is wired properly, monitors the voltage for too low or too high conditions and will shut off power if need be. I do not plug in without it. It will also work on an adaptor for 30 or 20 amp use.

We have the Progressive Industries HW50C surge guard from RVUpgrades.

I chose Progressive Industries over the Surge Guard because Progressive provides 3640 joules surge protection while the Surge Guard only provides 1750 joules. Both provide similar protection for over/under voltage, reverse polarity, missing ground, etc. I also feel Progressive's remote read-out gives me more information in the event of a fault.

I chose the hard-wired model for convenience (once it's wired you just plug your power cord in to the pedestal - nothing else to plug in) and to deter theft.

We also use the Progressive Industries HW50C. I chose it above the others for the reasons paz listed as well as their service.

An example, while at a CG in Pahrump, NV I connected to a pwr pedestal the rig ran for about 30 mins and the protector shut down. I tried a couple of pedestals, same problem. There is an overide switch on the read out display, I operated that and e-mailed Progressive. I expected a response within a couple of days, less than two hours later I got a call from their tech support, they asked me what version control board I had, the one I had was upgraded, they sent me a new one, they overnighted me one and I installed in less than 10 mins. NO CHARGE. Can't beat that.

I have also been told but can't confirm it, that if the protector gets fried, due to a "Surge" they will replace the unit for the cost of shipping. But that might just be an urban legend.

Good luck and I highly recommend the HW50C!

Why the hardwired over the portable? Theft? I would think if it does get fried it would really stink up the motor home.

I also have the Progressive Industries hardwired model. Had it in my last coach too. When researching for that rig I chose PI over Surge Guard for the same reasons as paz.

Why hardwire? Theft prevention and not having to deal with it every time I plug in. I've seem some people to some bizarre things to try to secure their portable protectors.

With the PI protector if a surge blows the board it takes only a minute or two to replace that board. They say if the rest of the unit is ok only that has to be replaced.

We use the Proggresive unit also. Ours is the plg in type. It comes with a place that you can use a lock to secure the unit if you want. I have taken to leaving the unit in the wiring compartment and using a extension codr from the MH to the pedistal. Partialy for the convenience and for the idea that the best security is to not let someone know there is something to steal.

The unit has saved us at pedistals that are mis-wired and low voltage!

We have the PI SSP-50 surge protector. Is this the one you referenced and if yes, how do you lock it?

Thanks.
