I've read and/or participated in several threads over the past week or so discussing surge protectors, EMS and ATS.
When the topic was specifically discussing hard wired EMS, such as, one of the Progressive Industries HW offerings, the conversation would almost always turn to installation location.
Location choices being either before or after the ATS.
I have mine installed before the ATS. I have always regretted not installing it after the ATS, to protect the coach from not only the pedestal but the generator.
I was looking around Progressive's site last night and found they recommend against installing it after the ATS, see below:
From their FAQ page
"EMS-SURGE & VOLTAGE PROTECTION MODELS
"Q: Should a Hardwired EMS be installed before or after the transfer switch?
A: A hardwired EMS should be installed prior to the transfer switch. The reason for this is most RV generators already have built-in voltage and frequency protection. If the EMS is installed after the transfer switch, this leaves the transfer switch vulnerable to power problems."

I admit I don't fully understand this, the HW50C is a monitor that simply shuts down power to the coach within its housing (not at the source).
It doesn't try to correct the issue. How could monitoring and shutting down at the HW50C create issues for the ATS?
Wouldn't the ATS see the shut down the same way it would see a main breaker tripping in the coach's distribution panel? If it sees it at all.
It would not feed back to the ATS.
