Tell Me About Water Softeners

I am blessed to live in the Great Pacific NW where our water is amazing. I am planning an extended trip to AZ and eventually spending several months in FL. I have a 1 year old Entegra Esteem Class C. What are the advantages of installing an RV water softener? Once I lived in the greater Chicago area where they were prevalent. I remember they required the addition of salt to work. Do the RV versions require this? Would I damage anything in my RV (HWH) if I don’t add one? Thanks for the education!

Hi OlYeller

There are many places that a water softener is a necessity, AZ & FL are two of them. I use an On The Go Water Softener which is an 8000 grain portable model and uses 26oz of table salt to recharge.

The benefits of the softener are no corrosion on the fixtures, easier to clean sinks & showers, and soaps and shampoos work better. There is really no downside to one and being portable you don’t have to connect it if not needed.

I installed my portable as a built in but we use it everywhere. Recharges vary depending on hardness of the water and amount used. In AZ I recharged about every 11/2 to 2 weeks depending on how often I ran our washer.

We have a water softener for the 5th wheel. We have been in 10 different campgrounds so far this year in 6 different states so one is very important to us.

PS we just went full time in July 2019.

I have an On The Go double permanently installed in my wet bay. Made a huge difference in water quality. I have the pre-filter installed as well to make regeneration a breeze. I use regular water softener salt although you can use table salt if you're on the move a lot. Have enough valves installed so that I don't have to move hoses around except when I have to do a backflush. Our water in Texas is super hard so I get about one week between regenerations.

I wish I had installed it on day one to save myself all the plumbing issues caused by hard water.

another vote for on-the-go water softener. I buy water test strips to test the area where we stay. only hook up the softener when it's needed. also test the water coming out of my softener at times so I know when to recycle. wouldn't travel without it
