I was told the fridge operates better on gas than 110V. On our first trip out I lit the pilot light and waited and waited and waited. Thermostat set at max. Almost an hour went by and could not tell the fridge was starting to cool. I switched over to 110v and it started to cool down in 20 minutes. Finally turned it down after I found ice in some eggs. Is there a burner in there to warm the gas or does it rely on the pilot light to do it?
I know next time to plug the unit in for a day or so before we leave to precool it.

BnB:

I've always been told that to get 'em going, 120v is the trick, but propane will keep a fridge colder. and no doubt, propane vs have to keep 120v at it at all times is a much cheaper way to go.

Good subject...anyone else? I KNOW there are some experts out there that could shed alot more light than the glovebox light I just showed!

How old is the refrigerator? You should check the burner area and be sure that no rust flakes are obstructing the flame. IF the unit has not been cleaned for some time I would advise that you have it serviced. Otherwise the gas and electric modes of operation are designed to be equal. The flame should cause the boiler to react a little faster as the flame is instant and the 120 volt element will take a little time to get the heat up.

Hi. I have every reason to believe the fridge is the original one to the tt. 1971. I first lit the pilot and the box above it gradually got warm but no cooling inside. Is there a "burner" inside that ignites to warm the gas or does the pilot do the heating by itself? As mentioned the unit started cooling down inside after I switched over to 110v and did a good job over the weekend. I don't mind using it with 110 but I would also like to be able to use LP since it's on there. thanks.

Boog n Becky,

Welcome to IRV2. The "pilot" you lit IS the burner. It doesn't take very much of a flame to make aa absoption type fridge work. If the propane flow is resticed in any way at all the flame size (and heat) will be reduced enough to affect the cooling.

You should have a knowledgable technician check out, and probably clean, the burner and flue tube. Have the tech check that the baffle (if required in your model, and most do) is properly positioned. Also check to make sure the regulator is supplying the correct 11" WC gas pressure with at least half of the gas equipment in the trailer operating.

Hope this helps.

L8r,
Steve

Well ok. Thanks fellas. We'll do it different next time out. I'll precool it a day before we head out and then use the propane when we get there. The old fridge really cooled great, after it ran a long while. I found some ice in a couple of eggs. LOL thanks.
