hello everyone, I am new here. I have a 88 chevy 454 fleetwood pace arrow. the chassis battery appears to be fine, but for some reason I now need to hold the button down when starting the engine. it just started this. also maybe coincedently, the generator in the back will not stay running when i let go of its start button. what is going on here? are these issues related? thanks for any help. I need to get this resolved soon.
Pete

Welcome to irv2 fofdyfo.
If the button is the emergency start button than is operating a relay to send 12 volts to your starter from your house batteries.
I would check your ground wires from batteries to the chassis frame you may have some loose or dirty connections.
The Gen ground also.

Or.. a bad chassis battery... it starts the engine and the generator... But it needs to also keep feeding the generator for about 30 secs. I'd be willing to bet the voltage on the chassis batt goes real low under load.

Your chassis battery is bad or has a bad connection. The Aux button sends power to a relay to connect your coach battries to the chassis battery.

ok, thankyou all for your help but this aint over yet. first let me say I feel like an idiot, I forgot to trip the switch to connect the chassis battery. once I did that the motor starts with the key like it is supposed to. that problem is solved. I filled the tank full of gas and all the batteries are good and grounded properly. now the remaing big issue is the generator will still not run after I let the start switch go. I think it is the voltage regulator on the board, but I am hoping it is not. that will be expensive I am guessing. any suggestions?

We must know the make and model of the genset first.

The control board for your gen. is 12 Volts. The board gets 12V from the start switch while you hold it down. once the gen. starts, the gen makes 12V to keep the board working. If the gen. runs as long as you hold the start switch down and quits as soon as you release it, You have a problem with the 12v circuit.

ok. that makes alot of sence. now is that to say it is not the board? do you have any typical suspects of the failure point in the circuit. could it be a fuse faking me out? what would be the check list to eliminate the possible culprate?
btw, thankyou for your time. my son is comming in from the army this weekend and we are driving this thing 5 hours to all get together with family, so it would be nice to have this working. I will be a grandpa this month!

Service manual for a 4.0BGE Spec E is 965-0530 ( http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/pdf/manuals/965-0530.pdf)
I believe one of the first things you should do is clean the brush/slip rings. If that does not resolve the issue, then follow the troubleshooting procedures for a bge version control circuit. Starts on page 7-4 but the portion you want is on page 7-6.
Good luck,
Dave

is there instructions on how to clean the brushed and slip rings?
so you are pretty sure it does not need a new board like one guy told me over the phone at an rv place?

There are a about a half-dozen things it can be- unfortunately, you need some technical smarts and the ability to use a multi-meter to figure out exactly which.
It can be the control board, the voltage regulator, the stop side of the start switch, the fact that the generator is not sending AC back to the control board, in which case it could be dirty brushes (as previously stated) a bad commutator or no flash voltage from the gennie to the board.
How did I get so smart? We spent about 10 hours yesterday and today trying to diagnose the exact same problem on our Onan model NHE gennie
Yes, parts are costly. We've been talking with these guys- very helpful.

Oh, it can also be a bad oil level sensor.
