Thermostat Problem

This has been going on sporadically for a couple years and is driving me crazy. It's 50 degrees outside and I have my thermostat set to electric heat at 72 degrees. All goes well until suddenly, the thermostat temp reading drops from 71 degrees to 65. It is NOT 65 degrees in here. That causes the gas furnace to kick in because the demand and actual temp. are 5 degrees apart.
When I turn the system off, the inside temp. still reads 66 degrees which is wrong. I have a free standing thermostat that confirms it actually 71. What is going on? I can find NO temp. pick up sensor in any of the ceiling return vents so I believe the reading is taken at the thermostat. No vents were opened suddenly, nothing!

Does your RV have a remote thermostat somewhere sending the colder reading.

I have a separate thermostat in the bedroom that controls the rear air and gas furnace. I'm confident that they are not connected in any way. No other thermostats exist in the coach.

Also, I have a room thermostat that I sit right next to the RV wall unit. Wall unit reads 65, stand alone thermostat reads 71.
Over time, while heat is turned off, wall unit suddenly clicks up to 71... strange

We had a similar but different problem. The set temperature would change all by itself. Different than your air temperature changing, but maybe a similar source? It turned out on ours to be a bad circuit board at the furnace.

Im starting to think my thermostat is not an issue. The roof heat pump is making a grinding rattling noise and blowing cold air. It's only in the 60's outside.
Interestingly, I went out for a while.and had the system turned off. When I returned, outside temp was 64, inside was 69. I turned on elec heat and it immediately began rattling and groaning, blowing cold air. Never tried to blow warm. Also, the gas furnace came on at the same time. When I checked the "set" temp., it was at 74 ( there's that 5 degree difference between set and room temps). "Set" temp. was previously at 72... I don't understand this.

If you're able to, try swapping the thermostats and see if the issue follows that one. If it does, replace it. If it doesn't there is another issue...

Only the thermostat in the main cabin has controls for the elec heat pump. The thermostat in the bedroom controls only the gas furnace.
