Thinking About Adding An Electric Range/Oven

My wife absolutely hates the Magic Chef LP drop in range/oven we have. I am thinking about replacing with an electric unit. I have a 50amp 120/240volt service and several blanks in my load center. I am a bit limited in space. The Magic Chef cutout is 20" wide. I have found some drop ins made by Seaward that are close in size but they are pretty pricey. They have one 120v unit but I think you are limited to using either the range or oven but not at the same time. Whirlpool makes a 20" slide in unit that I could fit in but it takes a 40amp 240v which I have room for in my panel but I am not sure it I can power manage things to keep it from tripping the shore power 50 amp breaker.

If anyone has done this or has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks,

Rick

Rick, it is true that if space allows you could install the 120/240 vac range but if the circuit did not go through the EMS and you had all the burners on you could trip out the main. I doubt you will use all the burners at the same time and you could train your wife to be her own EMS if she want the electric range. Good luck and keep us posted.

You would be limited to true 50A hook-ups if you did that. You may find some campgrounds with 50A outlets are not in fact delivering a full 50A or perhaps not even 240v. I've seen 120v/40A with amp capacity as low ss 30A. Not often, but it happens.

Also, your generator may not deliver 240v. The Onan 7.5 and 8.0 KW Quiet Diesel models are 120v only, even though they are rated for 60 amps. The output is two x 120v circuits rather than a 240v configuration.

First... I won't give you my opinion of electric ranges save to say Gas is way better for cooking.. WAY WAY better. Ask any professional cook, they all cook with Gas.

Now... The problem with your plan is if you are hooked to 50 amps. and the park is properly wired.. it will work

but if you are on a 30 amp site, it won't work,, If you are boondocking and you have the same kind of generator I have (Onan Gold 5500) that outputs 120 volts twice instead of 120/240 it won't work.

You need a good 240 volt supply for the cook top to work

I'd stick with Gas myself.

Might be easier to change the wife than the stove, but the expense probably kills that deal. Try to get your wife to get used to the stove as is. It took my wife a while to get used to it. She actually uses the microwave more. The last option: you do the cooking.......

Let me put in my two cents worth. I have a two burner stove and a microwave/convection inplace of an oven. This setup works great. You can bake anything you want in the microwave/convection. The convection oven is actually an electric oven. It works on 120volts.

My "RV" is actually a houseboat that has two 50 amp 240 volt plugs on the shore power pedestal. My 8.5 Westerbeke genset belts out 240 volts to power my 2 ton heat pump. Most of these type boats are built with two 50amp power cord. Mine only has one because of the gas stove and refer.

The stove is nine years old. If she isn't used to it by now....
Plus you have to go up on the roof to turn on the LP. Then you have to stand on your head with a lighter to get the oven pilot light lit.

Just curious...what rig do you have that has the LP valve on the roof?

(that's a new one for me and I'm always trying to learn something)

Good luck solving this one.

(FWIW, my wife is a gourmet cook and is happy with electric range/oven at home and a gas range/convection micro in the rig. If she complains, I just send her home and eat junk food. )

My "RV" is a houseboat and my LP locker is on the roof. I post on this forum because my systems are more RV like than marine.

My wife does not mind cooking on gas. It is just the PITA to turn the gas on and manually light the oven. At age 60 we do not get up off of the floor as well as we used to. I am just trying to keep Mama happy. If Mama ain't happy, ain't anybody happy.
