Totally confused about AC

Have been trying to replace my AC units on the coach.
I have Dometic duo-therm with heat pumps.

Dometic says they DO NOT make 13,500 units with heat pumps.
People are saying they are buying the Penguin 11 with heat pumps.
Dometic says these are heat strips.

Can someone clarify for me.
I do not want heat strips

Just taking a WAG at it but a heat pump is generally in the basement area of a coach. If these are roof airs they probably are heat strips. We do have a heat pump in ours and it works well.

Dometic shows at least 1 13,500 heat pump model on their web page https://www.dometic.com/en-us/us/pro...uin-ii-_-20772

this is a low profile model, but I know I saw higher profile units a couple of months ago

15k roof Dometic units can have heat pumps included. It just makes them run backwards. I would suggest going with the 15k units and have the added benefit of more A/C

I believe Winnebago is/was the only manufacturer with heat pumps in the basement.

I had 15k AC/heatpumps on the roof of my Dutch Star.

I have 13,500 Dometic Penguin II heat pumps on the MH. I am in the process of replacing the front unit with a 15K Dometic Penguin II heat pump. You obviously got someone at Dometic that didn't know what they were talking about.

We've had three DP's with roof mounted heat pumps, and no DP's with basement mount ones.
Most RV heat pumps are roof mounted.
BTW: 12,000 btu of cooling equals 1 ton of cooling when equaring to home units. My rig has 3 15,000 btu heat pumps so about 3 3/4 tons of cooling.

Just a suggestion.. Go with 15000 btu instead of 13,500. Not much difference in price In many cases they won't draw more power than what they replace.. but as the world warms. you are going to love the extra BTUs. I know I do.

One other advantage of a 15,000 btu Dometic over the 13,500 is that the 15,000 will heat down to a lower temperature (about 28F vs 37F on the 13,500) as the 15,000 btu models have a defrost cycle that is missing from the 13,500. Though performance is significantly reduced below 37F.

We use the Aquahot for heat, but just in case the AH has a problem
on a cold morning, we would like to stay with a heat pump.

After I received the letter from Dometic, I called them.
They did a reversal and said they do have the Penguin 11
that has the heat pump.
Since we are replacing our stock units, we will also need to
change the five button thermostat to a newer one.

We have now ordered the penquin 11 models and will have them installed
next Tuesday.

Thanks for the replies.

I wish I had responded earlier, because I was sure I had what you were told didn't exist. I knew only because the covers are hard to find, and even harder to find in black. Happens to be in an '02 Monaco, likely set up much like yours.

Please post what you do with the thermostat....I would be interested in the benefits of a newer model.

Got both front and rear AC's replaced with the Penquin 11's with heat pumps.
Sittiing on the Gulf Coast in humid heat.
We had to replace the control unit also.

We have Aquahot for heat and have three thermostat, bedroom, bath, and front.
We can set the temp. in each and the temp is controlled in each area.

The control for the AC is placed in the kitchen area of the coach.
I set both AC zones at 70. The back dropped down to 68 while the front of the coach was 74. Dawned on me that there is only one thermostat. Had to set the back AC to 73 and the front to 70.

Just wondering why there is not a thermostat in each zone that would work with the master control unit.

Pros....the fans are quieter. lot less condensation.

Thermostat control

LuckyD,

For temperature control monitoring, there is a thermal sensor mounted in the coach wall. It will look like a half golf ball or a cat eye shaped sensor.

It feeds back to the thermostat to let it know what the second zone temperature is.

I don't know how Aqua hot monitors their zones, but the process would be similar.

Be aware that furniture placement, room fans, open windows, vents, etc, can affect the accuracy of the thermisters.

Not sure what coach you are talking about but mine does not have
these sensors.
My last coach (Pace Arrow gas model) had one sensor in the LR and
one in the bedroom.
