The smoke is an indication of incomplete combustion from an unbalanced air/LP mixture. You could have an insect nest or spider web in the air passages, you'll have to remove the covers to check and blow out with an air compressor. The other issue could be LP gas pressure problems. This needs to be checked by a U-tube water manometer, not usually in your home tool kit. In other words, get a professional to look at it. The pressure should be 11" WC. Continued operation of an out of adjustment burner can result in soot build up and efficiency issues. It should be repaired/adjusted before too much use.
