Thanks to all who replied. The flaking of the coating was so widespread, over the entire tray, that I thought it could be caused by overheating. The U-Line people told me that is not likely the case, that it happens on ice makers that are idle for a long period of time (like years in my case). When the unit is shut down, they tell me, the water in the tray becomes warm and can start getting under the coating (crappy coating if you ask me). It then starts corroding the tray, which is made of cheap pot metal (my words). What I should do is shut down the water supply to the icemaker PRIOR to shutdown, let it go through 2-3 cycles, and then use paper towels to dry the tray as best as possible. Also, leave the door open. Maybe I should leave it on even when the unit is in the garage.
