Why not turn of the shore water or pump, remove the water line behind the frig and check for the white flakes. If they are there a filter may help. If they are not there, they are coming from the ice maker. Draw a glass full and freeze, or put some on a dark colored plate and let evaporate. Its cheaper than a filter you may not need.

I agree. I think that you need to take a mirror and look over the ice cube maker tray to see if the tray coating is flaking off. Mine was a mess and I replaced it with a new ice maker from Lowe's.

You may not need a filter after all.

Are there any instructions any place on the Forum about how to remove the ice tray? Can the tray be removed without removing the whole ice maker or getting involved with any of the mechanism? Mine seems to be okay for now but I know from past experience with a home ice maker that these trays do not last forever without messing up the ice cubes.

Thanks everyone for the help - Cliff; you're right. It is fed from the bay - I never even thought to check my schematics! As for replacing the ice maker: what;s the part number, or SKU, for Lowes, and can it be replaced without removing the fridge? Anybody got step-by-step instructions?

I added one of these to the hose before it goes into the RV water system. So now the water gets filtered for sediment twice before going into the coach. (coach filter) Seems to have cleaned up the ice. They are cheap at Wally world and do not restrict the water flow.

The entire ice maker comes out with a few screws, disconnect the water fill tube and the electrical harness.

Go to Lowe's and ask for the Whirlpool or Frigidaire Ice Maker. Take your old one with you to compare, #57773, model #ECKMF94.

They were about $50, maybe more now.

I venture a guess this is the OP's problem instead of filtration.
I replaced our 2005 Dometic ice maker because the coating inside the ice tray was coming off and putting flakes of it into the ice too. The good thing is, most ice makers are universal/interchangeable. I bought the new one on the internet for <$40.

Wow have things changed! Lowe's now wants $99.88 for the ice maker, and I found one on Amazon.com for $74.50...

I'm torn right now - since it appears that the ice maker gets its water directly from the input, pre-filtered, do I try a filter first - spending around $50 for the filter, miscellaneous parts, etc. or spend $100 on a new ice maker and hope that solves the problem...

You're lucky yours is only $100 to replace, ours was about $250 and that was shopping around for a few months for the best price.

I can't believe how much they have gone up in price. That's simply gouging the consumer.

What I would do is to shut off the ice maker water supply. Then remove the ice maker water supply line from the solenoid in the rear. Then using a clear container, have someone turn on the water enough to fill the container. Let it sit for awhile then take a look see for the contaminate that you are concerned about. If it's there, then install a good Ice Maker Water Filter, if not then chances are your ice maker tray liner is deteriorating.

When searching the Internet for the best price on the ice maker, use both Google and Bing for your searches and go out to about 10 pages each time.
