Water Heater

My water heater is gas only. Do I need to lite it when I get set up or only lite it just before we use it? All the hot water will be used for is dishwashing on this trip.

You can lite it when you set up. Just be sure it is full of water before you do. As far as keeping it lit all the time is your decision. Turning it off and on doesn't hurt anything just allow enough time for the water to heat before you need to use it. Good luck and have fun.

What are you driving?
I just found out ours gets heated as we are driving from the engine, didn't know that until yesterday.
We could never figure out how there was so much hot water when we got into a campground. The water heater was not on, I thought maybe it was from the heat from the tires, nope the heater tank is in front of the Tires. Three years and no answer until I was reading in the manuel yesterday that it heats from the heat from the engine, lots of heat from a 454.
I remember that on my semi there were lines that ran in the Fuel tanks to prevent freeze ups in the winter
Have you read your manual? You might find your answer I did... I'm still trying to figure out if I have Anode rod and it didn't say in the manual either way so you might not find your answer
Best of luck to you & Happy Travels.
Tim

Open outside door to WH and determine manufacture from ID plate

Atwood - no anode rod
Suburban - Anode rod

We keep ours OFF more than 20 hrs a day. Only turn it on in morning as coffee is brewing for morning dishes and clean up, then off until dinner, dishes and showers.

American Standard makes water heaters for commercial and residential use. Some of their smallest units might fit in an RV but are not typically found in them. Anything less than 30 gallons are electric only. Maybe they once made RV water heaters, but not today. Their water heaters are steel tank, glass lined, so they wouldn't need an anode.

I too have never seen, or heard of, an American Standard water heater in an RV.

However every water heater I have seen, (residential or RV), with a steel tank, (whether glass lined or not), has an anode rod.

Example: Suburban RV water heaters have glass lined steel tanks AND an anode rod.

The old American Standard and Mor-Flo RV water heaters are now Suburban

The old Bowen RV water heaters are now Atwood.
