Water Heater Issue

Hi. My water heater works fine when using gas but I can't get it to heat on AC either when on shore power or generator power. It worked fine a few weeks ago. I checked the main breaker panel and the breaker seems fine. I also changed the switch on the bathroom wall in case it was bad. There is power at the switch as confirmed with my tester. Any ideas about anything else I can check? I'm new to the RV community and am afraid I'm missing something that might be obvious to someone else. Thanks.

First turn all the power off I sure you know that but I had to say it, find the back of the heater there will be a silver box it will have a switch on/off. Remove the box it should have 2 nuts top and bottom. First check that you have power at the main feed wire, check the on / off switch that it's good, from the switch it connects to 2 round T-stats first shuts down @ 140 which is normal the second is the back up it shuts down @ 180. Using contunity on the meter start at the t-stat the the switch hooks to check to see if it tones out across t-stat leave the one probe on the switch side then go to the first side of the 2nd t-stat that will check wire then to the other side of that t-stat from there it will go to the heating element. There will be a reset button on one of the t-stats sometimes that kicks out. If all checks good to the element then it's burned out. You can ohm it out to verfiy, there are wrenches at most home centers that will take it out. Drain HWH then remove have a bowl handy there might be some water left in there that will come out. They are a basic HWH element they do the same thing as the one at home do.

Nothing But The Reset

Thanks nightriderrv, it was indeed the reset. I reset it and it's run for several hours now. I don't like that I don't know what caused it to trip, but I'm happy it's working. I just bought this rig (our first one) last October and I'm really enjoying learning how things work. Thanks again for your help.

It could have got too hot at one time, but just keep a eye on it the water temp should around 135 to 140 give or take, it's hottest right after it shuts down. Try to take a reading closest to the heater just use one of those temp probes like you find in the supermarkets pour it in a coffee cup dip the probe in let it set.
