Earlier this spring we left our W/H in bypass mode and burned out the Electrical element. We have now replaced it in the Atwood, but we cannot get it to heat on electric. Are we missing something. Advise!

You didn't mention it in your posting, but did you check the circuit breaker? It might have tripped when the element burned out. I'm going to assume that you never even thought about looking at the breaker as you were, most likely, alerady "unplugged" when you changed the element.

Frank:

I checked, and no breakers are tripped. Perhaps the two leads to the element are reversed? Electrical is not my strong suit.

Frank, we used to live in McCandless Twp. I am quite familiar with "The "Burg"!

"G.G.":

I never replaced the electric heating element but I have an RV repair manual with a diagram showing the components of an Atwood 6 gal. DSI HWT. If it were me, I'd be getting out my volt/ohm meter and testing for continuity of the circuit (with the power disconnected, of course) beginning from the circuit breaker. Unless someone else with more HWT experience can chime in with a better suggestion, this is where I would begin.

The diagram in the repair manual shows a separate thermostat that attaches somewhere to the heater (or element). Could it have been damaged when the element overheated? Since I never had to buy a replacement heading element, I don't know what all comes with it.

McCandless Twp is in the North Hills and we live in the South Hills-- not too far far from Century III Mall. If it existed when you lived here, this should give you a good idea of where we're located.

Did you check the circut breaker on the back of the water heater? It is hidding in a small black box with a hole in the center. You will need a small stick or pencil to reset it (push on it). On my motorhome I have to climb into the cabinet next to the water heater to reach it.

You may want to do a search on this, as it was discussed a while back.

Some water heaters have a remote on/off switch located on the outside the water heater. If yours has one maybe it has been inadvertently turned off?

Worked on the WH today. Re-checked everything, pulled out the Atwood manual, and found a reset area within a powered lead terminal. Pushed it several times, and it now works on 110AC. Thanks for all your suggestions!
