Water Heater problem

Hi there. I've searched the forums and haven't see a solution to this so all help is welcome.

I have a 1991 Beaver with an Atwood Water Heater, model GC10-1E.

When I first moved into the Beav I couldn't get the hot water heater to turn on. OK, I was an idiot and eventually found a propane "ON" switch but the hot water still wouldn't light. Fortunately, I live in an rv park with really nice bathrooms so I showered there for 2 days until my ex came back to town to look at it. He didn't do anything that I could see - it just started when I flipped the propane "ON" switch. (I just talked to him on the phone and he confirmed that he really didn't do anything)

ok, fast forward 2 weeks. This morning I go to shower and I don't hear the hot water fire up. It ALWAYS does when I shower and it's incredibly noisy (sounds like a jet engine). I checked my propane tank and it says 3/4 full. Mind you, it has said that since I've been in it (I hope the gage is working!!). the only thing running on propane is the hot water heater.

So I looked at the instruction book, found an on/off switch on the tank itself (under the bathroom sink) and turned it off assuming my tank was in lock out.

So I'm stumped. I've tried flicking the on/off switch on the tank. I've tried turning the propane on and off.

I turned on the burners on the stove to see if I was out of propane and they seem to be running just fine.

I miss having a pilot light!!! This direction ignition sucks!

Does anyone with an older Atwood have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Do you hear the igniter clicking when you turn the water heater propane switch on? It should click for 10-15 seconds trying to light the burner. If it is not doing that, you've eliminated a whole bunch of possible problems, including everything with the propane itself.

Here's a link to a basic water heater troubleshooting guide.
