I have two problems that may or may not be related. On a couple of occasions my gray water tank has filled to overflowing, apparently emptying my fresh water tank. DW says she has heard the pump running intermittently when we are not connected to an external water source. However I still can't see how the water is getting from one tank to the other. All faucets are off, and there is no apparent leakage in the sinks or shower. Toilet leakage should go to the black water tank, which does not seem to be a problem. I have been turning the pump off for the past couple of days, but have not yet been able to come up with a probable solution. I emptied the waste tanks two days ago and filled the fresh water tank. This morning the black water tank ios near empty, the gray is full and the fresh is almost empty.

The possibly related problem has been that the water heater pilot light, which usually comes on for a few seconds when the water heater switch is turned on, comes on and stays on. The heater is heating the water. I don't know if means there is a problem with the pilot system or the heater is low on water, or if it is even a problem.

Generally, if your water pump is intermittently on/off it indicates a water leak somewhere.

I take it you do not have this problem when you are hooked to external water.

What happens if you fill the fresh water tank less than full?

I am probably stating the obvious when I say there is a syphoning effect between the fresh and gray water tanks. A common vent pipe?

When you turn off the water pump does the grey water tank still fill and fresh water tank empty? If not, you have located the source, now you must find where the fresh water lines are pumping into the waste tank. A time-consuming trace of each line is required, behind walls, under floors, etc.
The water heater pilot indicator light may be caused by a dirty ignitor, faulty flame sensor, or dirty burner. Have you cleaned these recently?
