Winterizing Question: Water in heater supply line.

Just winterized OK. But - I notice that after turning the water heater valve to bypass, there is water standing in the supply line to the heater. I use the pink stuff, but can see clear water in that line. This year, for the first time, I opened the valve to the heater (with plug out of the heater) to purge that out. However I never did in the past and have never heard of this topic being addressed.

This last spring when I turned on water supply there was a leak in that very line. A fitting just behind the water heater froze and busted even though theoretically all steps were taken.

Anyone else purge this line BEFORE turning the valve to bypass??

How far away is the water heater bypass valve?

From the pump about 6 inches. From the water heater, about 8 ft.

I take it the problem is the line(s) from the by pass valve to the water heater? I have often wondered about this scenario. Also the line from the city water inlet to the main cold water line. I usually depress the check valve in my city inlet to get the pink.
