After almost 11 yrs my Atwood water heater giving up the ghost. Water leaking from the bottom of tank. Hoping for a lose fitting, no such luck. I think 11 yrs is good for a tank but when I priced new one--Oboy got my attention. I guess you play sometimes you pay. Whats the longest anyone has gotten out of their tank.

Another question I would like to hear answered related to yours, would an extended warranty plan cover a water heater rusted out after 11 years of use?

I doubt normal use would be considered a failure under an extended service contract, especially after 11 years, since most are limited to a 10 year old RV.

At 11 years you got its useful life. I had one in a 1985 that rotted the tank out in 2002. This was a rig that spent its entire life in the desert with very little humid enviroment.

If properly maintained and water is treated before it enters the coach you should never have to replace the aluminum tank. When I sold my first class A, it was 23 years old and still had all the original equipment (still working).

RV Wizard----23 years is unreal. I guess proper maintence really makes a difference. I amit I just used mine with just a flush out when I thougt of it. Next one I will be nicer to. Told DW that fridge might be next and tires are getting close to the five yr mark, might be time to look at newer unit. She isnt biting on that. Her words---I like this one and its cheaper to replace a few parts than a new one. Oh well I tried. Guess whos the boss

I had an 89 Safari for a little over 17 years, orignal water heater in it when I sold it, still going strong. Never winterized, changed the zinc regularly, pilot light ignition.

'93 with original tank, i had to replace the bypass valves on it from rust, but the tank still is in decent shape. i think if it ever goes out i'm going with the "on demand" system instead.

I repair the Atwood tanks. If you carry them in stripped clean It's $35.00, To weld and test them.;; Now the rest of the story; Nornal life is about 10 years; That is average.. Now the cost for a ned tank is that price shock, It is a sit down price. Near $400.00 That seems high . But;; life is good; Oh let it be clear I am not solusiting work.;

bachler--Thanks for the weld repair offer I would like to visit your state but not right now, summer time is my time. A number of years ago I did rv repairs and had replaced a number of tanks under warranty for people and it was a big hassle. Much nicer to replace the whole unit. I guess when you rermember prices from 15 to 20 yrs ago and see todays prices of 550 to 700 dollars it took me somewhat by surprize. Have to click the old brain into the presant day. Thanks to all for sugestions from everyone of where to find one. Think I found one on ebay,

ATWOOD 6 GALLON WATER HEATER FOR PARTS TANK GC66A10E - eBay (item 350422846225 end time Jan-13-11 09:14:12 PST)
My old rig 1990 Mallard Sprinter,my son inlaw has it now, and the atwood water still works,and so does the 4kw onan,which doesn't have to be run once a month like the new ones do, and 454 engine,run great too.Just wish Onan would make them like they used to.
Any who,just like Dean says drain atwood,never get all the water out,and no antifreeze ever,and it still works fine,so I hope all you have is a leaking pipe that can be repaired at a lower cost.
