Xantrex inverter popping GFI
Xantrex is closed today, so I thought I would post this until I can call them on Monday. All the sudden, my Xantrex is causing my GF I plugto blow. I don't have any problems when running the gen set or when plugged into Shore power so I don't think I have a short somewhere but I think I have a problem with the inverter. Already pulled the cover off and the visual inspection doesn't show anything wrong including the two fuses are okay also. Has anyone else had this problem with their inverter, and what did you find? I have the freedom 458

Try this link, http://www.irv2.com/forums/f54/inver...fi-147599.html.
The first page last response, diagnosed as a bad charger.

Well, I read that whole thread and that is a different problem. That thread is about blowing the GFI in the house they are plugging into for shore power. My GFI downstream from the inverter in my coach bathroom is blowing. I have found others with the same problem, but none posted the fix.
Any suggestions as to what to check for would be great. thx

Gfi needs power to set and power must be correct.
If was good before then gfi may be wonky.
They have the 3 light plug testers that have a gfi button that can be used to test as well.
It could be the connection from inverter to gfi is not "clean".or an internal ATS may be damaged.
Meaning the neutral or safety ground may be co-mingled with other circuits and there may be a short between the two.
You may need to remove the gfi from the wall and check the wiring to be sure.
Safety grounds all can be connected together and white seperate between line and load
It may be possible that the inverter may be generating something odd so testing gfi on a good source may isolate it.

Thanks Tony, I think the next step is to replace the GFI with a modified sine wave type. And then if there is still a problem, start testing from there.

Finally found a modified sine wave gfi and it made no difference. We even turned the outlet main breaker off and tried to turn on the inverter. It hummed loudly, lit the fault light on the panel and shut down immediately. Calling Xantrex support today.

Have you perhaps tried to turn off the breaker at the panel that controls the GFI circuit to isolate the issue. If all works with breaker off, I'd say your inverter may be ok, if not, ????
What did Xantrex say?

There is an excellent test flow chart for the Xantrex on their website. But I had to call support anyways and we completely isolated the unit for testing by unplugging the remote controller and battery temp sensor. I also disconnected the AC output. I could only get about 38 VAC output before the unit faulted. The inverting function of this unit is toast. I found I man on this forum that can repair it for about $350, which is a bargain. But I think I would rather just replace the unit with latest technology.
