I had one, er three, when I was a kid. Had an antenna raising party to put a "Starduster" on the roof. 22' roof height, 40' mast, had the Power Mic, and a 500w Kicker. Good for shooting skip, in the early am hours. had one in my car, and a little later, bought a handheld. Now I have a Cobra 29 indash, 250w "Killer Bee" Kicker, with a 48" "Firestick" Still have the Handheld. "QC, QC, QC DX"

Oh! Did I mention I have had my Advanced Class Amateur License since 1974? No? Did I mention that 1974 seems to be the year that CB went the way of major noise.
Ah! The good old days when you had to know Morse Code to get a amateur license. I could have gone for the Extra Class License but I didn't want to study more theory.

I always have the CB on when traveling; use an ear-bud so DW doesn't have to listen to the chatter. These days I'm a little concerned about the "distracted driving laws" thing that cell phones prompted.
Wayne, my first CB (1959) was a 6 channel, tube-type, crystal-controlled. Can't remember the brand name (gray box about 10" square). I remember my call-sign number just as well as my old Army service number.

...been away from CBs a long time, and just wondering, are they a lot better than they use to be back in the 70's/80's? I always had a lot of trouble hearing what I was listening to.
Is there a lot less static and noise in the modern CBs?

I miss not having the cg in our current coach. I don't miss the language used but when info is needed for road conditions ahead it sure came in handy. I'll probably look into re-installing it sometime this year.

I have one someplace, It is the cobra that has the all in one in the mic. I had a magnet antenna but it has been so long since I've used a SB I'm not sure where the antenna is hiding.

We use ours when traveling. Saved us alot of times with traffic and cops and roadblocks. No nothing illegal just did not want to mess with the stop and go traffic with them. Since I am the female half I use it much more than Thom does. The truckers will talk to me more and find it amusing with me driving. They get slightly possesive about others trying anything "bad" with me and then they all step in and tell the one(s) that are trying suggest something that they should not do that. It's rather sweet when they do that, lol.

The square box thing was known as the Johnson white face, it was a real talker, I had one also. There was a 10 channel that was known as the black face.

I have an old Galaxy 99 that I keep in the truck and use to stay aware of what's going on around me. Being a solo driver, it also helps to keep me entertained.
The 99 is apparently no longer manufactured, but it was a heck of a radio a few years ago. I've been offered the same money I paid for it, and probably could have gotten more for it. It's still on my transmission hump...

I have a CB under the back seat of the truck and a magnetic mount antenna. Truthfully, I can say it has been at least 5 years since I had the thing out. If I want to listen to anything, I turn on the short wave radio.
