Group of us just came back from Memphis and while everyone else was sleeping I was driving. Turned my junky cb radio on and was listening to mainly the truckers, pretty funny some of it. So I'm thinking of putting a really good CB so I can join in without being just broke up static and noise, I don't know... Any CBers out there in RVland?

I have a CB radio in my pick-up truck, and use it on trips. I have a Cobra 50th anniversary that was bought from Wolcott CB Sales. It has a weather alert on it, which I like. Very loud alert. The CB also gets used when friends of the family run together.

Regards,

My 4x4 club uses them to stay in touch on runs. Other than that, CBs are like this forum....anonymus comments with 'internet friends' (strangers).

Mine is on all the time, need to work on a better antenna mount so I have better range but always happy to talk to a fellow rv on the road.

Before I retired my trips also were done with everyone sleeping and me driving all night long and all that time on the CB. I still use my CB but there are not as many truckers out there on the CB's. I have a relative that is a truck driver and he stays on his cell phone when on the road. I hardly ever here any Smokie reports anymore but I haven't given up. When I am on the road my CB is allways on although I am thinking of adding a bit more power so I can reach out farther.
So there it is Good Buddy. You got the Number one Groundpounder on the side.

Anyone using single sideband (SSB) these days? It used to be common when CB was in its hey-day.

Use ours when we see traffic backing up to determine which lane we need to be in to get past whatever is holding us up.

I used to do alot back in high school and a few years beyond that. My home ch was 8 and we had a large group of home bases and mobile units on it, a couple of parents and kids both. It was so much fun. Better than the cell phones and texting and twitter they use now by far and the language was cleaner. Did my own work on the radios and antennas. I use to do homework, talk a bit on the CB and then listen to cbs radio mystery theater before crashing.

SSB was popular and with the solar activity there was lots of skip.

A few of us use to play around by having one car park and the rest of us use to track that car down. We made a directional hand held antenna with copper tubing and a dowel to facilitate that.
I guess I would be called a geek nowadays...

Now it's all quiet on the upper four channels that use to be popular with ssb.

I use it only to monitor the trucks and it is really handy to know what lane to get into when there is a tie up. Still fairly popular with the truckers in the east here.

I use mine in my MH for caravaning and traffic. I also have one in my Jeep for the same reason.

"CB" Does that stand for Crystal Ball?

I was on CB before CB was popular. We'd monitor CH-11 and when we heard our Call sign, yep call signs back then, we would switch to another channel that was not in use and converse. Licenses back then were $5 or so. It was a pleasing experiences, THEN;

1974 came along. The oil industry reported that there was an oil shortage. Lines at gas stations started forming. Different mandates as to when a person could or could not get gas became prevalent. Every Tom, Dick, Harry and Jane Doe went out and bought a CB just so they could find out where the gas line was shortest, and what station was selling gas. Some stations ran out. Truckers went rampant on CB, and so did the populace. Noise was the strongest reception. The noise was caused by everyone talking all at once. If you didn't have a contact within a couple car lengths, you didn't communicate. I said the heck with it and went and got my HAM license.

Ah! The good ol' days.

p.s., my first CB radio was an old Raytheon Tube type. On my way to Syracuse University Research lab I blew a final. With the help of some engineers there we took the tube finals out and put in transistors. That was around 1971 time frame.

And if I need a new interesting combination of curse words when working on the MH....
