Is it tuneable? If it is you need to tune it. I have a thru the glass mount on MH,short distance its okay, but thats it.In the cb world they are also known as junk.I was going to upgrade if I ended up using the cb alot, but I dont.

I had one thru-glass CB antenna that worked, but nothing fantastic. Another one that I got from Camping World never would work.

Frankly you would be better off with a decent magnetic mount than a thru-glass mount. Another good approach is is to use a base loaded with a trunk lip mount. Mount the antenna on the edge of the hood so you do not have to drill any holes in the truck.

I have found the through the glass CB antennas are fair on reception, but poor on transmission.

Ken has the best answer.

I also believe tuning only affects transmission and has little or no effect on reception.

I have a wilson Glass Mount, tunable. But all the same results. Use mainly to listen to truckers for accidents, bears and such.

Best Regards, Clyde

You have to tune the antenna so that the maximum amount of power is radiated at the antenna and the least amount is reflected back in to the radio on transmit. This is measured by the SWR which is the radiated power vs the reflected power. You want the SWR under 2.0 and as low as possible.

The tuning has some effect on the receive, but not as much as the transmit.

The Wilson thru-glass is about as good as it gets with that type antenna.

Thank you gentlemen for your input. My antenna came from Canadian Tire and is tuned.
The base load antenna fitted on to the fender at the back end of the hood seems to be the way to go. I will look in to doing that.
Cheers.
Brian.

Right ! TXiceman. Another thing that helps in to cut the antenna lead to as short as possible.
NEVER just coil it up and stuff it away.

For your lead and low SWR, divide 468 by the center frequency in megahertz and divide by 2. That will give you a half wave lenght of anenna lead. You can use any multiple of that figure.

Example 468 divided by 27Mhz = 17.33333 divided by 2 = 8.6666 feet of coax cable. Then you can tune the thru the glass LC network for lower SWR (not that it really matters at that power level).

There is another problem with Through the Glass antennas...

If the glass has any kind of tint, or solar coating, it most likely will reflect the power back to the radio...

I have had several, mostly 2m, and never could get them to work as promised, the bottom line is you are working with a compromised antenna to begin with.

If it is the only choice, sure, but if you can do anything else, I would...

John
