CB Radio Is it useful to have

Howdy, my 1997 Southwind 32v came with a CB radio and Antenna. It had been used at one time but was disconnected. I had a new Pioneer Stereo CD player installed today and while I was at it I had the installer relocated my Cb and hook it up.

Do many of you use CB radios? I know that channel 9 is for emergencies, however where do the Semi Truck drivers listen and broadcast??

Trucker use channel 19. There was a movement few years ago for RVers to use channel 13. But with such a limited range you never spoke to anyone. There are so many other things that have made CB obsolete. I almost never turn mine on.

I use mine quite a bit when traveling with another couple or two, but if I am traveling alone I seldom turn it on. the exception would be a traffic back up to check 19 for trucker chatter.

We have used the CB while traveling in years past. Now the RV's come pre-wired and a decent CB can be purchased for under $50. So why not???

Listening to the trucker traffic did pass the time and was entertaining especially when we had to travel late at night.

These days we travel between 250 and 350 miles per day with a lunch break. That's between 5 and 7 hours of driving seat time so why bother opening ourselves up to the increased obscene and vulgar chatter from CH 19 on the CB???

Yes it would help with traffic jams but when in a MH it's not as big a deal. We just turn on the inverter, brew a cup of coffee, take a pee or eat a sandwich and relax.

CB for traffic is useless. By the time you hear anything, you're stuck in the traffic. Most good GPS units now have active traffic monitoring and will alert you much sooner and offer alternate routes.

In a serious traffic backup, trucker info can be helpful to tell you how long the backup is and suggest best detours if needed.

I started truckin' over 40 years ago. No cellphones, computer or gps in my 18 wheeler. Would never have considered leaving on a run without a CB radio. Fast forward to today, the CB radio is an endangered species on the way to extinction. My current motorhome does not have a CB, nor do I want one. All the best.

You're better off with a FRS/GMRS hand held if traveling with another RV. They have a range of 24 miles - better than most CBs can do.

I believe the cb is still useful. The information provided by truckers in regards to accidents and weather conditions can really be helpful. I would keep one handy just incase. Sometimes the cell strength is bad and the cb can be a great alternative.

We gave away all our cb's years ago...

now the only reason we have one in the jeep now, is the club uses them on the trails to help with spotting in the more challenging areas.

A CB is a handy item to have as others have said, but if RVs would put them on CH13 than other RVers could talk to each other.
