As to grounding back through the radio, this is a poor ground !
Ground the antenna mount with at least a piece of #12 (#10 0R #8 would be better) to the chassis of the motor home, do the same with the radio, this will help with noise abatement as well.
A mobile antenna is nothing more than a vertical dipole and the radiating element is looking for a "counterpose" , counterpose being the frame or ground side of the antenna (dipole).
