I have seen it done that way but have no idea how effective it is. I mounted my Firestik with the recommended 2/3 above the roof line. I used one of the coil springs at the base so it will bend but not break.

I had installed a firestix on my class A, for it to be any good it had to be above the roof line. The higher the better they say 2/3 above. Now I am playing around with my new rig with 5 ft 'ers

I have a 102" whip mounted to the front bumper with a stand off at the hood on my class A. Works incredibly well. Mounted it in front because the rear is plastic. It sticks above the roof by about a foot, still works great.

FATMANAR, The Firestick is a nice antenna and it's tunable. I have mine mounted on a mild coil spring because we have a go-zillion low hanging live oak trees here in South Carolina. The antenna is mounted as a replacement to the OE antenna provided by Winnebago and it's my 2nd Firestick, the 1st having been destroyed by a direct lightning strike!

Damn, were you in your coach when it hit?? Did it do much damage to the coach? Some of my favorite places have low limbs and that is what I was concerned with in keeping it low. Guess we will just put a spring on it and hope for the best...Happy Trails..

FATMANAR, I was sitting in the middle of a thousand or more RVs and managed to be the "one" that got hit. Funny now but yes I was sitting next to my CB which got blowed up!

You need to have a minimum of 1/2 of the Firestix above the roof of the coach. If you are concerned with it getting whacked, mount it on a spring mount.

FATMANAR,
This may be a given but I assume when you asked about a firestic ant you're referring to their "no-ground plane" antenna? If not, you may want to consider that.
What length are you looking at? I bought a 4 footer thinking it was the right size but discovered because of the mounting location (lowering it isn't an option) 2/3 above the roof is just too high. Now I need to get a 3 footer. If anyone is interested in a 3 way mount FG4-648-B for a good price, PM me.

Would there be an advantage if a person would mount a Firestik on both sides of the coach say on the mirror arms, would they still have to be above the roof, most of us have fiberglas rigs, so you have to be concerned about the ground plane with 2 antennas as I understand it that problem is taken care of. For me 2 antennas would be ok, or a 102" whip on the rear bumper would be ok, I have the space for either. I am a new ham so I have a lot to learn.

Most antenna come pre set.A firestick has work for many years.Although i use a francis as it is pre set and has a good output. Now that being said as far as where to place one.An AM antenna can use the body of a vehicles as a directional.Truckers really send more signal to the back of them then to the front. There long trailers act as a directional for the antenna. If you want more signal out in front of you then i suggest putting your antenna toward the back. This means a long coax to make it to the front where your CB will be.Another thing that makes a good strong CB is modulation.A good power mic or a modulator makes for a strong CB.A CB is a AM radio and AM stands for amplitude modulation hence the Modulation.Hope any of this helps.O and most antennas do not need to be grounded as the coax is already grounded so is your CB when pluged in with the power and ground cord.
