I am going to get a CB again but will have to have it wired by the RV service center next week. What I need is the right equipment. Those of you who know, could you tell me the model, make and antenna etc that is the best to get. I don't understand ground planes and all that but I'll follow the advice of anyone smarter than me (which is just about everybody!)
Thanks for any advice.

You may already have a CB antenna on your Newmar now. The coax cable from it would be coiled up under dash with the 12v wires with it.
I have a Cobra hand held unit with a connector for Ant and 12v hookup Velcro-ed under dash. The Cobra unit has speaker, channel display and all controls within the unit.

I monitor CB about 20% of the time and in 60,000 miles of travelling, I have yet to hear a fellow RVer. I have learned 4 new cuss words however. I have been warned of road obstructions a couple of times

I do listen to ham radio and foreign broadcast on my ham rig. For emergency, I use my Cobra hand-helds which also have weather radio.

I do not care for the all-in-the mic radios. You have a poor quality speaker and a so-so mic. You are much better off getting a plain under the dash mount and spending the money on a Fire Stix NGP antenna. Mount a 2 or 3' NGP with at least 1/2 of the antenna above the roof.

I have a cobra with the weather band and weather alert on it. I think it is important to have the alert to wake me up if need be. The higher the antenna the better as I understand it. By the way I think rvers use ch 13 no 19 but dont know for sure since I am always on 19 and want the truckers to tell me about road issues and if they see any thing wrong with me and my toad.

I also understand if you use a very good coax and antenna that is going to give you the best reception.

OK have had a couple drinks and may have spelled some words wrong or made any sense. hehe

Geeze, hamguy, you only learned four new cuss words in 60,000 miles? You were either lucky (or unlucky depending on your point of view) or you knew alot of them before

I have a Cobra Classic and it works well.

I'll go along with a CB radio with a weater alert. Cobra, and Radio Shack have them. You may also want to check out Walcott CB sales. I don't know the web site off the top of my head. I'll also agree on the all in one units sound "tinny",

Also, yes truck driver do use fowl language from time to time. I don't think it's right. Some drivers fail to understand that it is a CB radio, not a phone. And on a personal note, I think that it is sad that you have to use that type of language to get your point across.

Good Luck,

Recommend having a professional radio shop install setup as opposed to RV dealer. Unit needs to be tuned for max performance.

CB radio has helped many times in lane closures as I listen and know which lane to get into...saved four hours in southern Illinois once when I was able to get off and miss a 20 mile long traffic jam..usually keep the squelch low so I can only hear local chatter unless there is an emergency...I was always told that he who has to use foul language to get his point across has a limited intelligence as espoused by his limited vocabulary...didn't say that I agree with it...just what I heard as a child.

He only had the radio on for 30 seconds, hence the slow learning curve.

Maybe using this forum we can get the word out that RVer's use channel 13. I have had RVer's come back to me on channel 19 but not 13.
